Precycling: EV battery dismantling

Large batteries that have reached the end of their life, whether from electric vehicles (EV), industrial machinery, energy storage systems, or the maritime sector, must be handled with care and expertise. Since 2011, Sortbat has specialised in EV battery dismantling and the precycling of large end-of-life batteries, building deep knowledge through its operations in Belgium, Norway and Sweden.

Sortbat expands to Sweden

Sortbat Sweden, operated by Nemax, delivers independent battery precycling services for EV, BESS and maritime batteries, from transport and storage to second-life assessment and recycling routing.

Our EV battery dismantling process step-by-step

From planning to dismantling and final processing of batteries: we take full responsibility. Throughout the process, we ensure traceability and reporting to the customer and the relevant authorities regarding the battery.

The precycling process begins with a comprehensive analysis together with the customer, to identify and assess the risks associated in precycling the high-energy battery.

If needed, our flying technicians can provide on-site services, including post-accident handling or maritime operations. Moreover, no two batteries are alike. That’s why we always adapt our processes to the battery’s technical condition and the customer’s specific needs.

Based on a thorough checklist, we determine the condition of the battery and identify potential risks.

ADR-certified drivers ensure compliant transport. Upon arrival, the battery is securely stored and monitored for any reactions. Given our extensive expertise in handling large batteries, we also assist our customers in selecting the appropriate packaging needed for safe transport, tailored to the condition of each specific battery.

Before dismantling begins, the battery’s condition and potential for reuse are assessed. Batteries that meet strict criteria for reuse or second-life applications are handled while still charged and are dismantled under close supervision using advanced safety systems.

Batteries that do not qualify for reuse are discharged and dismantled under controlled conditions for further material recovery.

Modules suitable for reuse can help reduce overall costs and, in some cases, even generate positive economic value.
These modules are sent to second-life operators for further processing and reuse. Remaining modules that are not eligible for second-life applications, along with all other material fractions, are sent to certified recycling facilities to ensure regulatory compliance and sustainable solutions.

Innovation in EV battery diagnostics

Wattloop

As part of its commitment to innovation and circular battery management, Sortbat collaborates with the Ghent based start up Wattloop to support the development of EV battery diagnostic technology.

By providing a diverse and representative range of EV batteries from different brands, Sortbat enables Wattloop to test and refine its technology in real dismantling conditions. The technology allows battery data to be read instantly without opening the battery pack. This improves safety and provides insights into the condition and remaining value of battery modules.

These data driven insights support better decisions on reuse, resale or recycling and contribute to a more circular battery value chain.
