A new standard for sorting and detection
The number of battery types is growing fast, making manual sorting more challenging. Xbat.ai solves that challenge. This joint venture of Sortbat (60%) and VITO (40%) uses AI and X-ray technology to enable the semi-automatic sorting of batteries.

Innovation
We improve battery sorting processes through an innovative combination of X-ray and AI technology. This combination enhances safety while reducing the operational costs of battery sorting.
Optimisation
We are advancing the Xbat.ai technology to further optimise our sorting machine. Additionally, we use the combination of AI and X-ray to pioneer new machines for detection purposes in other waste stream applications.
Commercialisation

ReUse
The ReUse project develops direct recycling processes for LFP-based lithium batteries and production waste, creating solutions applicable to upcoming and future low-cost battery technologies.
Sortbat provides expertise across 4 key areas:
- comprehensive EU market analysis of current and future LFP waste streams;
- detailed technical description of production waste and end-of-life LFP batteries;
- detailed safety protocols for storage and processing;
- regulatory guidance to enable cost-efficient, safe material transport between all project partners.
CaDaNS
CaDaNS is a living lab started by Flanders Make and Åska Bike, supported by VLAIO. Its goal is to make the electric bicycle industry more sustainable, focusing on speed pedelecs.
We apply our expertise in evaluating second-life potential for LMT (Light Means of Transport) battery packs and optimising chemical composition sorting to improve overall recycling efficiency.
CENELEC
Sortbat contributes to European battery standardisation through CENELEC, the European Electrotechnical Committee for Standardisation.
We share our knowledge to help develop standards for battery reuse across bicycle, residential and large-scale industrial applications. Our expertise helps establish industry benchmarks that ensure a safe and effective way to empower battery afterlife throughout Europe.
